Caring for Dental Implants

Your Implant is an Investment Worth Protecting

By following these simple guidelines and maintaining a proactive approach to oral care, you can help promote the success and longevity of your dental implant.

Dental Hygiene and Professional Care – While implants cannot get cavities or tooth decay, they can still be affected by periodontal (gum) disease which may result in bone loss or infection around the implant. Care for your implant by following these simple steps

  • Brush at least twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Clean between your teeth and below the gum line daily with tools such as floss, interdental brushes, or a water flosser.
  • Rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce bacteria.
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year to have your implant evaluated and cleaned. Your dental hygienist will clean your implant crown just like a natural tooth to help prevent plaque buildup.
  • If you clench or grind your teeth, wear a mouthguard to help protect your teeth and your implant.

Signs of Concern – See your dentist immediately if any of these occur.

• You develop pain around the implant.
• You experience swollen or bleeding gums around the implant.
• Your implant crown becomes loose.
• Your bite feels different.
• Your gums recede around the implant.

Reduce Your Risk

• Avoid smoking and tobacco products.
• Eat a well-balanced nutritious diet.
• Stay up to date with your dental visits.
• Contact your dentist promptly if you experience unusual symptoms or discomfort.
• If you are diabetic, keep your A1C and blood sugar well-controlled.
• Avoid chewing on hard foods and ice or using your teeth to open things.

By following these tips and maintaining regular dental care, you can promote the health and longevity of your dental implant. For personalized advice or to schedule a follow-up appointment, please contact our team. We’re here to support you.
