Tooth Extractions
You and Dr. MacMenamin, Dr. Brown, Dr. Burns, Dr. Shearen, Dr. Tyler, Dr. Capp or Dr. Snodgrass may determine that you need a tooth extraction for any number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they are severely decayed; others may have advanced periodontal disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Other teeth may need removal because they are poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted teeth) or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.
The removal of a single tooth can lead to problems related to your chewing ability, problems with your jaw joint, and shifting teeth, which can have a major impact on your dental health.
To avoid these complications, in most cases, Drs. MacMenamin, Brown, Burns, Shearen, Tyler, Capp or Snodgrass will discuss alternatives to extractions as well as replacement of the extracted tooth.

At the time of extraction, your surgeon will need to numb your tooth, jaw bone, and gums that surround the area with a local anesthetic.
During the extraction process, you will feel a lot of pressure. This is from the process of firmly rocking the tooth to widen the socket for removal.
You feel the pressure without pain as the anesthetic has numbed the nerves stopping the transference of pain, yet the nerves that transmit pressure are not profoundly affected.
If you do feel pain at any time during the extraction please let us know right away.
Sectioning a Tooth
Some teeth require sectioning. This is a very common procedure done when a tooth is so firmly anchored in its socket or the root is curved and the socket can’t expand enough to remove it. The doctor simply cuts the tooth into sections and then removes each section one at a time.

I went to the New Richmond Clinic for a tooth extraction. Oh, my goodness! I can't say enough good things about Dr. Snodgrass and her staff. Friendly staff from the time you walk in the door til you leave. Excellent prep work and then time for the actual extraction. What had been a dreaded experience became a positive one. Dr. Snodgrass was so reassuring that everything was going well and would end well. And it did. Loved her "dad" jokes and assurances that everything was going to be fine. It seemed to be over so quickly. Also excellent instructions for aftercare. Thank you.

Everything. Mom is a 92 year old with tooth cracked at Christmas. She was in such pain that she was incredibly weak. The staff and practitioner were helpful from the moment we got there from helping getting mom out of the car (no wheelchair medical transports available), wheeling her in to letting her stay in her wheelchair. From the moment we got there to the pulling of the tooth staff were there to help and make it as easy as possible. Mom and I are grateful for extraordinary care. The oral surgery center in both Woodbury and Cottage Grove made accommodations for 2 days to make sure her blood levels were okay and moved appointments to accommodate mom’s medical needs. The Oral Surgery Center treated me with kind patience and respect. The receptionist went out of her way to fit me into the schedule at no extra charge to me. She contacted my insurance company so that I knew ahead of time exactly what to expect in terms of cost. The surgery team explained everything to me before it happened so I knew what to expect during the procedure. I was very anxious and the surgery team stepped back and helped me pull myself together before moving on with the procedure. First of all, they worked me in for an earlier appointment than scheduled because the pain was getting intolerable. I was thankful to get in sooner and I did not wait very long before they took me back. I chose Novocaine for this procedure as I have had this in the past. This time, and I'm not sure why, I began to panic when parts of my mouth started to go numb. Dr Shearen was so calm and patient with me during all this. He monitored my BP the whole while, talked me through everything, and wouldn't proceed until he knew I was comfortable to continue. Believe me, a dental office is the last place I care to be. That said, I am truly grateful in knowing in time of need, we have these amazing doctors and surgeons and their nurses/assistants, who use not only their learned skills but their gentle demeanor, in making a bad situation into a good experience. I appreciated Dr Shearen's skill in both these areas. Thanks again!
