Dental Implant Process | Dental Implant FAQs | Implant Patient Reviews
Your teeth affect your whole body. When they’re healthy, you’re healthier too. Dental implants are a popular way to replace missing teeth. They will not decay, they can be brushed and flossed like natural teeth, and when cared for properly, dental implants can last a lifetime.
Dental Implant Procedure: What Happens Step by Step
Placing dental implants involves several carefully coordinated steps, which are designed to ensure a successful, long-lasting result. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during the procedure:

Before any treatment begins, you’ll have a consultation with one of our experienced oral surgeons. During this visit, we’ll discuss your dental health, examine your mouth, take X-rays or 3D scans, and assess whether you’re a good candidate for implants. We’ll also review your medical history and any current health conditions. If necessary, we may recommend preliminary treatments like bone grafting to ensure your jawbone is strong enough to support the implant.
Step 2: Treatment Planning
Once you’re deemed a candidate, a customized treatment plan will be created, tailored to your unique needs. This plan will take into account the number of implants required, the condition of your jawbone, and any additional procedures necessary (like sinus lifts or bone grafts).
Step 3: Implant Placement Surgery
The next step is the placement of the dental implant. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia, and you may also be given sedation options to keep you comfortable. During the surgery, the oral surgeon makes a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the jawbone. A tiny hole is then drilled into the bone, where the titanium implant post is inserted. The gum tissue is then stitched back over the implant, leaving the post to fuse with the bone during a process called osseointegration (this can take several months).
Step 4: Healing and Osseointegration
After the implant is placed, it will need time to heal and integrate with the jawbone. This healing process can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months, depending on your bone health. During this time, the implant becomes securely anchored in the jaw, which provides a strong foundation for the final restoration.
Step 5: Abutment Placement
Once osseointegration is complete, the next step is to place the abutment, which connects the implant post to the final crown. This procedure is often done in the office with a local anesthetic. The gum tissue is reopened slightly to expose the implant, and the abutment is attached to the post. This step usually requires a short recovery period of a few days.
Step 6: Crown Placement
After the abutment is placed, impressions of your mouth are taken to create a custom crown that will fit securely onto the abutment. Once your permanent crown is ready, it will be attached to the abutment. This crown is designed to match the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless, natural-looking result.
Step 7: Final Adjustment and Follow-up Care
After your crown is placed, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment to make any final adjustments and ensure that your implant is functioning properly. You’ll also receive instructions on how to care for your dental implant to ensure its long-term success.
Aftercare and Maintenance
With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing around the implant area. Regular dental check-ups are essential to monitor the health of your implant and surrounding tissues.

I just had a dental implant placed. Dr. MacMenamin and his team were amazing. I was nervous about the procedure and considered sedation but opted to just go with local anesthesia. Dr. MacMenamin made the process so easy, I had a laugh that I even considered sedation. It was one of the easiest dental procedures I’ve ever had. They’re very good about explaining after care in recovery and called a couple of hours after my procedure to check on me. Highly recommend!
